A method to compute periodic sums
In a number of problems in computational physics, a finite sum of kernel functions centered at N particle locations located in a box in three dimensions must be extended by imposing periodic boundary conditions on box boundaries. Even though the finite sum can be efficiently computed via fast summation algorithms, such as the fast multipole method (FMM), the periodized extension is usually trea...
متن کاملApplications of interval computations to earthquake-resistant engineering: How to compute derivatives of interval functions fast
One of the main sources of destruction during earthquake is resonance. Therefore, the following idea has been proposed. We design special control linkages between floors that are normally unattached to the building but can be attached if necessary. They are so designed that adding them changes the building’s characteristic frequency. We continuously monitor displacements within the structure, a...
متن کاملA numerical method to compute solidification and melting processes
This paper deals with thermodynamically consistent numerical predictions of solidification and melting processes of pure materials using moving grids. Till date, enthalpy-porosity-based formulations of numerical codes have been generally the popular choice, although because of an artificial numerical smearing of the interface, it is virtually impossible to reproduce a sharp melting/solidificati...
متن کاملA Complex Data Method to Compute Fmri Activation
In functional magnetic resonance imaging, voxel time courses after Fourier or non-Fourier “image reconstruction” are complex valued as a result of phase imperfections due to magnetic field inhomogeneities and random noise. Nearly all fMRI studies derive functional “activation” based on magnitudeonly voxel time courses. Here the entire complex or bivariate data are modeled rather than just the m...
متن کاملA global Newton method to compute Nash equilibria
A new algorithm is presented for computing Nash equilibria of ̄nite games. Using Kohlberg and Mertens' structure theorem we show that a homotopy method can be represented as a dynamical system and implemented by Smale's global Newton method. The algorithm is outlined and computational experience is reported. JEL Classi ̄cation C63.
